What to do for diaper rash

• Keep the area clean and dry by changing the baby’s diaper often.
• Remove the diaper and allow the baby to lie naked on a blanket, allowing the irritated area to dry.
• Use soap sparingly as soap can be very drying to the skin, being careful to pat the area dry.
• Baby wipes can be very irritating to the skin; therefore it may be best to use washcloths and water.
• Do not use talc powder as this may be dangerous to your baby’s lungs; cornstarch is safer but may promote yeast overgrowth in the diaper area.
• Use a diaper rash ointment such as Aquaphor, A & D, Balmex, Desitin, or zinc oxide as a protective barrier to the skin.

What is diaper rash?

Diaper rash is irritation of the skin that is exposed to urine, stool, infections, and diaper chemicals.  Babies can develop diaper rash during, or after taking antibiotics.  This type of rash is caused by a yeast infection and needs to be treated by a doctor.  Babies can also get diaper rash after being exposed to various foods especially from 6 to 9 months of age.  The diaper itself can cause irritation of the skin in which case the brand of diaper should be changed.
